What is the Shahji temple and why visit it?

Shahji Temple is one of Vrindavan's most artistic landmarks, an ornate marble temple built in 1876 by two wealthy jeweller brothers of Lucknow, Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Phundan Lal, great devotees of Krishna. It is unlike the usual temple in feel: a fusion of Indian and European craftsmanship, white marble, fine carving and chandeliers, raised over about eight years. Even a visitor with no devotional purpose is struck by its beauty.

The deity is Radha-Krishna, worshipped here as Chhote Radha Raman, the little Radha Raman, after the small, exquisite idol. The temple's formal name is Lalit Nikunj.

The twisted pillars and the Basanti Kamra

Two features make Shahji famous. The first is its twelve spiral marble pillars, each about fifteen feet high and, it is said, each cut from a single piece of marble, twisting upward in a way that gives the temple its popular name, Tedhe Khambe Wala Mandir, the temple of twisted pillars. The second is the Basanti Kamra, the spring room or darbar hall, hung with around fifteen Belgian glass chandeliers, its throne, doors and great mirrors gold-plated, its ceilings painted with scenes of the raas-leela.

In the tradition, Krishna once appeared to Shah Ji in the Basanti Kamra on Basant Panchami, and to this day the hall is opened to the public only twice a year, on Basant Panchami and during the Jhulan Yatra.

A tip from Gurudutt: If you possibly can, time your visit for Basant Panchami, around late January or February, when the Basanti Kamra is opened, it is the one chance to see that golden, chandeliered hall, and it is unforgettable. On ordinary days, still go: the twisted pillars and the carving reward an unhurried look. Notice the samadhis of the two founder brothers near the entrance; their story, of devotion that gave up wealth and even chose to remain in Braj's dust after death, is part of the temple's soul.

The founders and their devotion

The brothers Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Phundan Lal were jewellers of Lucknow who poured their wealth into this temple as an act of devotion. Their samadhis stand near the entrance, and tradition holds that they wished even their last rites to keep them in Braj: not to be carried on shoulders but drawn through Vrindavan's dust, and not burned or cast into the Yamuna, lest the smoke or the water carry them out of the holy land. It is a story that gives the ornate temple a tender, human heart.

How do you reach the Shahji temple?
